Position Question

If a player like Moises Ballesteros, who is not designated as a C, but is used primarily as a DH by the Cubs, does NOT get to 10 games having started at C (he’s at 1 and might not get to 10), does he then become a UTIL player only? If so, when? Thanks.

f.Player positional eligibility

  1. An offensive player is eligible to fill a position if he:

    1. Played in 10 or more regular season major league games at that position in the current or preceding year

    2. Started 5 or more regular season major league games at that position in the current or preceding year

    3. Played in 20 or more regular season minor league games at that position in the current or preceding year

  2. Players will be given SP eligibility if they are the starting pitcher in 5 regular season games in the current or preceding year

  3. Players will be given RP eligibility if they pitch in relief in 5 regular season games in the current or preceding year

  4. Players designated as pitchers by Ottoneu’s stats provider will get a default RP eligibility if neither of the previous two rules apply to them

  5. All non-pitcher players are given a default UTIL position elgibility.

Very specifically about Ballesteros:

2026, he’s a C all year.

2027 he either starts 5 games at C and gains C, or he’s a UTIL-only.

Position updates are mentioned in the end-of-season thread, you can search the forums to see how those have worked in the past - I try to log every step.

On any given player page, you can see both what they have now for 2026 and what they have earned for 2027, as well as graphs showing progress towards any position eligibility.

Most importantly: players never lose position eligibility within the current season. They can only gain it.
