OPL RP Strategy and Compliance with Ottoneu Roster Rules

Yes they do.

Section 3d Scoring:

All pitchers can be placed in either SP or RP positions on the lineup and roster organizer pages. However they will only accrue statistics if you use them in the same manner as their MLB team

As I said before, this is in the roster scoring section, not the ‘fill our a starting lineup’ section.

Exactly. Filling a starting lineup and scoring points are unrelated. The scoring section indicates pitchers can fill any pitcher spot but only score according to real world use. The roster section is not about scoring; only about being able to fill a starting lineup.

Just as the rules don’t specifically mention rostering an MLB 1B, the rules otherwise necessitate it. The same is not true for pitchers.

Consider the following hypothetical statement:

“All hitters with more than 1 eligible position are considered utility players and can be placed in any hitter positions on the lineup and roster organizer pages.”

This statement is fake and made up by me. But it is meant to illustrate the opposite situation that is currently present in the rules for pitchers. This would enable certain hitters (1B/OF or 2B/SS types) to fill lineup positions they otherwise are not shown as “eligible” for and therefore enable owners to forgo rostering a true catcher.

The rules DO specifically mention rostering an MLB 1B, for purposes of filling a starting lineup. And all other positions, including RP.

Maybe I’m not understanding you, but this is my whole point. I agree the scoring section is clear, but I think the legal roster section needs to clarify that SPs can go into RP slots for the purpose of a legal roster.

Each team shall during the regular season maintain a roster of 22 major-league players that can fill out a starting lineup as defined below

  1. In non-head-to-head leagues, a starting lineup consists of one slot at each infield position (catcher, first base, second base, third base, and shortstop), five outfielder slots, one additional middle infielder (second base or shortstop) slot, one additional hitter from any position (utility slot), five starting pitcher slots, and five relief pitcher slots.
  2. In head-to-head leagues and during the playoffs, a starting lineup consists of one slot at each infield position (catcher, first base, second base, third base, and shortstop), five outfielder slots, one additional middle infielder (second base or shortstop) slot, one additional hitter from any position (utility slot) and five relief pitcher slots. The number of starting pitcher slots depends on the league’s Per Week GS Cap setting

I read this as slots that have to be filled.

Reading it as literally as you seem to be, would almost suggest that you could not start a 1B/2B player in a 1B slot because the positions do not match exactly.

Not quite the same though. I’m saying that the rules imply you can’t put an SP in an RP slot. SP/RP would be fine, just like putting a 1B/2B at 1B would be fine.

A couple of years ago, my league/commissioner read it literally and forced me to put RPs in those slots. They wouldn’t allow me to use players only qualified at SP.

That seems to be quite the unique ruling. They are picking and choosing which statements to read from the rules.

All pitchers can be placed in either SP or RP positions on the lineup and roster organizer pages.

Yes, I agree it’s very strict. However, confusion around the rule remains, given that the commissioner asked in the Slack at the time and respondents agreed that RPs must be used, the OP’s question, and the second comment in this discussion that says “OttoNeu rules clearly state a minimum of 5 RPs. Period.”. And again, the point you’re bringing up is in the scoring section, not roster section. I think it would be helpful to have the rule clarified in the rosters section.
