Why is the keeper deadline so early?

Something can be straightforward (walking) and difficult (…30 miles). My point was, I don’t see a causal relationship between the 2ish month “down time” and the ability to recruit new players.

I think keeping leagues going is hard no matter the format (I have friends in 5x5 roto leagues that lose a guy every year and are always asking me to join, I think it’s just part of the hobby)

I’ve yet to hear a reason why the freeze deadline can’t be decided by each league on their own.

I addressed that

Your answer doesn’t address leagues that are still trying to fill abandoned teams, only committed owners. It’s hard to recruit owners in January and even harder after rosters have been frozen.

If there is some reason your not saying, like back end administration or budgeting, I get that, but otherwise I don’t understand why leagues can’t decide freeze dates for themselves just like they do for the draft dates.

This is not a complaint toward Ottoneu! But I think a rebuttal to this is we have more information on injuries. For example, I am now stuck with $20 less dollars in the draft because I kept a useless Pablo Lopez.

Chiming in here after going through more turnover in our league

1- Having the cut date customizable by each league makes a lot of sense. Having a universal cut date for “commonality” doesn’t make as much sense, although I respect the intention. Why draw this line in the sand?

2- separate from that — I understand and love the rule that a new owner can come in after the currently universal cut date Jan 31 and make cuts. What I don’t understand is why all the other teams can’t be given the same opportunity to make additional cuts of their own and respond to this action. In our case we had 2 new owners and the auction pool $$$ was changed by a significant amount. The “unintended” consequence of this is all the teams loyal to the league (on a platform where turnover is high) are left in a worse position.

If you allowed customized cut dates it would alleviate both these points.

Each league could do what’s best for them and if new owners are given a chance to cut and impact auction strategy, the rest of the league could respond instead of being penalized for being loyal. Everyone can win.

The keeper deadline is an Ottoneu holiday, and that is a red line.

I’m pretty surprised that no one seems to notice that commissioners have a ton of control over moving players and removing players in all leagues, and if you guys want to do stuff like that, you can just do it. A ton of asks for trades after the deadline but no mention that commissioners can manually do a trade. Asks for cuts after the deadline, but no mention that again, commissioners can do that.

Deadlines have a certain purpose, and while they are lightly undermined by commssioner transactions, they serve that purpose - encourage activity, get people thinking about baseball again, and get everyone in 90% of leagues that don’t have any turnover ready for their draft.

On top of that, having a keeper deadline that is common and works for most leagues allows Ottoneu to drive content like this:

This is another big reason why its important for a small service like Ottoneu to have commonality.
