Filtering out PH/PR (non starting lineup) games

Hi guys - this seemed like it might be the most appropriate slot for the Q.

So when looking at various players (it actually seems to come up fairly frequently for me) I always go back and recalculate their actual ppg to represent points per game started. I’d guess the vast majority of teams are not leaving players in that are not in their starting lineup (so much so that we literally have a feature to auto bench those). These PH/PR games for many platoon or just guys that get thrown in there as they are ramping up playing time etc usually have a major affect on the ppg metric. Statistically this may not be a huge issue when he hit a certain game volume or we are looking at a period where there are enough PH events that the PA’s begin to normalize to their standard performance, but when looking at a single year and for even the highest frequency pinch hitters… 5-15 PA’s is almost irrelevant. So I like to find and check on actual starting lineup ppg stats since that is all we care about.

Does anyone else do this or have they found an easy way to pull and omit that data? I’ll be sticking it all into a model now that I find myself doing it enough manually. Trying to just pull and omit those games from FG player game logs is what I planned on doing with just a logic formula to not count if PH/DH is mentioned in position column.

Side note - I think it could be a fairly useful platform tool to view player ppg toggled between total and starting games. When trying to evaluate my bench performance it throws a huge wrench into it since a fat chunk of games started are pinches. So I’ll be trying to double up on that to spit out my starting game bench data as I plow it all into a model as well in case anyone else has looked at this.

I’ve definitely looked at this, and usually in the offseason I’ll put together a list of players that are undervalued because of pinch hitting or defensive replacement games played. My go to, since FG doesn’t split this out, is bref. Their player pages have splits by starter or substitute, and then I just manually copy them down to one of many sheets I have to calculate P/G or P/PA. I do find myself eyeballing the last 10 games played table, and mentally adjusting the figures as well, heh. I think it helps somewhat during the season, especially for players that are in a platoon and I’m actively evaluating them.
