Yep.
Some leagues frown on ending the season with an illegal roster (e.g., you won a $50 Mike Trout with a last minute auction and donât make any corresponding cuts). By which I mean, youâre in an illegal state prior to the start of the off-season rather than become what would be illegal once the off-season starts.
Enforcement and tolerance for that sort of thing varies by league, but in some places theyâd require you to make cuts (or take Trout away). In most others, itâs not an issue. Hopefully this is something that your league discussed before the season. If not, then youâre technically okay within the letter of the law to go into the off-season with an illegal roster; however, some might feel that it violates the spirit and require that you make some cuts.
Makes sense! Weâre a new league, so Iâm not sure we anticipated it. Thanks to you both for clarifying.
Question about rosters. Thereâs a team in a league Iâm in that aquired 25 free agents at the close of the season. They now sit with a roster of 69 players and only 45 roster spots. The budget is at $518, when their cap is $418. The commish reads the rules as this being OK and believes this team does not need to cut back the roster to be in legal standing. Is this the intention of the rules? I think theyâre trying to avoid having to cut some really good players because of the predicament the team was put in and the commish is OK letting them have an illegal roster through arbitrarion all the way to free cuts. I read the rules as a player is never knowingly supposed to go over their roster limits.
Thanks for any input!
This is a flagrant violation of rule 1c.
In one of my leagues, the commissioner sent out a reminder not to do this very thing a few days before the end of the season. You may want to advocate for something similar next season and share with your commissioner that this is not tolerated elsewhere.
âOne announcement: I love the glut of last-minute auctions, but plz do not willingly exceed the roster limits (see Rule I.c.). While auction bids will be processed even if your team reaches an invalid state - and people can carry a mildly invalid roster in the off-season (bc you lose the IL spots) - no one wants to see a 57-man roster full of last-second invalid pickups.â
Thank you, appreciate the input. I read that rule the same way.
We have a rule specifically against this very thing. You have to have you roster in âvalid standingâ which is defined as equal or under your total salary cap (loans included) and equal or under your total roster spots (so you can have extra guys if they are on IR, etc.) at the end of the league year going into the offseason. Once offseason hits, you can do whatever (but site fixes most of this by not allowing trading before arbitration and no adds until post auction).
This is absolutely a violation of the spirit of the rule and should have to make appropriate cuts now via commish IMO.
