The Athletic has a pretty interesting article on the origins of Fantasy Football Index – and thus, fantasy football:
“A couple of years later, we got an email address and built a primitive website,” said [Bruce] Taylor. “This was back when you needed AOL or Prodigy to connect to the internet from your home — this was even before AOL started flooding the world with floppy disks and CDs. We hooked up our 2,400-baud modem — that was a really good connection speed at the time — and I couldn’t keep up with the incoming email. I swear every person with email at work had been waiting for a way to use it to goof off.”
