Marlins-Mets suspended game and end of the 2023 season

If this game is deemed final, the season will not be extended into Monday and the end of season steps will begin on Tuesday, 10/3/23. Otherwise everything will be pushed a day to accommodate our data provider handling the resumption of suspended games.

Let me know if you have any questions about this and good luck today!

It seems they aren’t gonna resume this game, but I’m waiting to see if its official status is canceled or F/8.

The Marlins-Mets game from 9/28/2023 is still showing as “Suspended” with the stats from the top of the 9th inning counting.

According to the MLB rulebook, this game should be considered F/8 with the top of the 9th not counting (Rule 7.02(b)(4))

(A) If one team is ahead, the team that is ahead shall be declared the winner (unless the game is called while an inning is in progress and before the inning is completed, and the visiting team has scored one or more runs to take the lead, and the home team has not retaken the lead, in which case the score upon the completion of the last full inning shall stand for purposes of this Rule 7.02(b)(4);

However, MLB does not seem interested in following their own rules here:

Statistics from the game will count, but MLB has not revealed the final result – win, loss or tie.

I do not want to draw this out any more than necessary, but Ottoneu should follow the official status of this game as well as the official status of the statistics from the top of the 9th inning. I’ve brought this to the attention of FanGraphs and their data provider, and I hope to have an update later today or early tomorrow.

EDIT It is important to read rules. Here is Rule 7.02(b)(5)

(5) Any postponed game, suspended game (that has not progressed far enough to become a regulation game), or tie game that has not been rescheduled and completed prior to the last scheduled game between the two teams during the championship season must be played (or continued, in the case of a suspended or tie game) to a completed regulation game, if the Office of the Commissioner determines that not playing such game might affect eligibility for the post-season and/or home-field advantage for any Wild Card or Division Series game

Emphasis my own. So, I guess leaving a game in a suspended state forever is a plausible outcome.

Does this mean all statistics and standings are final in Ottoneu?

Not quite yet. I’ll have a end of season thread, hopefully tomorrow morning. My guess is that nothing will change but I’m giving our data provider overnight to sort out this Mets-Marlins game. I’ve given them this input from the rule book.

Just to tie a bow on this game, it is now officially F/8 and a win for the Mets and a loss for the Marlins.

Officially, the Marlins stats from the top of the 9th do not count in the MLB record books. They will count from the Ottoneu perspective since we went final yesterday while the game was still Suspended in the top of the 9th.
