Can we get Tomoyuki Sugano SP eligibility?
Tomoyuki Sugano will have SP eligibility tomorrow.
A quick list of guys that may need SP eligibility after not accumulating enough GS due to injury last year: Shane McClanahan, Jacob DeGrom, Eury Perez, Kodai Senga, Brandon Woodruff, Lucas Giolito, Shane Bieber, and Drew Rasmussen (likely SP/RP tag).
Players who have RP eligibility do not need SP eligibility. Every single one of those players has RP eligibility.
This is also covered on the lineup page and in the rules.
Matt McLain is only until. I feel like heās never not been a second baseman. Just an injury last year.
Whole conversation in this very thread about him:
I havenāt seen position eligibility questions as they relate to Hyeseong Kim, so forgive me if this has already been addressed by other foreign players.
Since he had no professional US baseball experience until this year, he is still UTIL only. Despite playing professionally in Korea last year, where he started 118 games at 2B.
Thus far, the Dodgers have played him almost equally between 2B (4 GS), SS (5 GS) and CF (6 GS) in AAA. At this rate, he would need to play close to 60 games before gaining any position other than UTIL.
Could consideration for his professional play in Korea last year at least grant him 2B eligibility? A player in High A with 20 games would get eligibility but because he played in a foreign league he is being limited.
It feels ironic that a superior/flexible defender would see a delay in usability vs a poor defender who was limited to say, 3B or 1B only.
Well, there are a few things here:
-
No one asked for any position consideration for him, in the way that people asked for Seiya Suzuki in 2022. Instead of making an assumption, this simply could have been asked for.

Your math really only holds up if he needs to hit a 20-game threshold, which is a minor league threshold. If he plays 60 games in the minors without making the majors, then it wouldnāt really matter that he didnāt have eligibility yet. So your math and the argument that follows feels a little disingenuous.
For international players, Iām more than happy to give consideration to past play, but none of that is done by the site automatically and that is exactly the purpose of this thread..
Kim will have 2B tomorrow.
Thanks, Niv. I appreciate the consideration for international players. I did not mean to come across, nor do I think I was being disingenuous.
I can just ask next time.
It raised a greater question of considering FGās KBO and NPB data fo players who played in those leagues in the previous season when giving them initial position eligibility. I will mull that over and see whatās available to me.
Why is Jordan Lawlar still Util when he played last year in the minors and all year this year?
Player positional eligibility
An offensive player is eligible to fill a position if he:
Played in 10 or more regular season major league games at that position in the current or preceding year
Started 5 or more regular season major league games at that position in the current or preceding year
Played in 20 or more regular season minor league games at that position in the current or preceding year
Players will be given SP eligibility if they are the starting pitcher in 5 regular season games in the current or preceding year
Players will be given RP eligibility if they pitch in relief in 5 regular season games in the current or preceding year
Players designated as pitchers by Ottoneuās stats provider will get a default RP eligibility if neither of the previous two rules apply to them
All non-pitcher players are given a default UTIL position elgibility.
One of the tough-luck guys:
2024:
10 minor league games at SS
12 minor league games at 3B
2025:
17 minor league games at 2B
10 minor league games at SS
8 minor league games at 3B
Hope things the right spot for this. Would it be possible to remove the utl eligibility for Nolan McLean? More of an aesthetic concern but he has given up on hitting and only pitching going forward. If not no worries. Thanks!
We donāt manually remove positional eligibility. Heāll lose Util going into 2026.
Jordan Lawlar has FINALLY reached 20 games at a position in the minors (SS) but is still listed as Util only
I imagine heāll get SS overnight.
