Oops I ignored Limits

Ok, so I joined a 5x5 league this year. I’ve been in PG H2H points for 5+ years, and just assumed the rules were basically the same and did not dig deeper - that’s on me. I did not realize that the 5x5 has positional G/IP limits until I got a notification this morning that I have hit my C limit and will no longer accrue points at C. Has anyone run into this pickle before, and does anyone have advice? For regular positions I’m either fine, or only slightly ahead of pace for 162, so that should be easy enough. As mentioned, I maxed out C already and am at 1,130 of 1,500 IP allowed (pacing for 2,100). I’m 30 points ahead in first, but concerned that throttling my SPs will allow for resurgence among my peers.

Some potential thoughts bouncing around my head:

  • Should I try to trade away a $17 William Contreras since I can’t accrue from him? After increase and arbitration, he may not be keepable anyway
  • From a SP standpoint, I’m probably only going to start Skubal, Gray, McLean and Woodruff for the rest of the year - would it be wise to trade some peripheral pitchers
  • Should I just in general not trade players away since it might be wise to expect catching up, and not smart to give me competition some bullets?
  • Why does the roster allow for 2 starting Cs if you can only have 162 total games from the position? A bit deceiving…

I would 100% consider trading one of your C - that is a standard play (meaning, some people regularly do it, not that everyone is doing it in every season-long league)

I think you are already on the right path here in your thinking. Trade William and any extraneous pitchers to consolidate - you need less depth than most teams - into higher end players. or, if you can’t do that, for prospects or other future pieces.

Think of it as raising replacement level for your team only. Guys who are $1 pitchers for most teams are worthless to you. $5 pitchers are worth $1, $10 pitchers are worth $5, but $20 pitchers might be worth $25 and $40 pitchers might be worth $50 to you. Take advantage of that on trade market. You should be able to find some win-win trades when your values and other managers’ values are mismatched.

In addition to the above, I would emphasize maximizing your innings from RP the rest of the way, and aim to still hit the IP cap closer to the end of the season, since quality RP (even non-closers) can give you the best value per IP across the categories the rest of the season

Absolutely. He’s unlikely to be a keeper at that price. Just hope your league doesn’t notice you maxed out C or you won’t have much leverage.

Thats a solid base. As somone else mentioned, you should fill in with solid RPs and setup men to maximize points per innings for what you have left.

It’s because catchers play so many fewer games than other positions. The extra slot allows you to keep pace. You’re not the first to miss it and you won’t be the last!
